Woman stabbed to death in Narayanganj while resisting theft; suspect killed in mob beating
A woman was stabbed to death in Narayanganj's Rupganj today (16 January) after she reportedly tried to stop a theft at her home.
Later, the suspect, Mehedi, was beaten to death by a mob, police and witnesses said.
The incident took place around 3:30pm in the Kerabo area of Kanchan municipality. The victim, Amena Begum, was the wife of Dewan Kamruzzaman Babul, a resident of the area.
Confirming the matter, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mehedi Islam told The Business Standard that police rushed to the scene after receiving information and brought the situation under control.
"Preliminary inquest procedures have been completed and the bodies of both the deceased have been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy. Legal action is underway in connection with the incident," the ASP added.
According to family members and locals, Mehedi, a resident of same municipality, entered the house in the afternoon, apparently assuming it was empty. When Amena Begum confronted him, he stabbed her with a knife, leaving her critically injured.
She was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
As Mehedi attempted to flee the scene, local people caught him. Following the spread of news about Amena Begum's death, an angry mob gathered and beat the suspect. He died at the scene.
Locals said Mehedi had worked at the house a few days earlier as part of a team installing tiles, which may have allowed him access to the property.
