JU bans all campus events after 10pm to maintain peace and order
Jahangirnagar University (JU) has banned all types of events on campus after 10pm, according to a directive issued by the university administration today (15 November).
The announcement was made through an urgent notice based on a recent syndicate meeting decision.
The notice stated that, to maintain peace, order, and security on campus, no programmes should continue after 10pm until further instruction. It also directed that noise levels must be kept within tolerable limits during any events held on campus.
The circular further warned that organisers who violate the directive and continue events beyond the permitted time would face action.
Speaking to The Business Standard, the university's acting registrar ABM Azizur Rahman said, "Events were held inside the campus until around 3-4am last night. Many residents were disturbed, and many students are sitting for their final exams. For this reason, we issued the notice today to enforce the restriction."
However, according to a previous syndicate decision from 20 September 2023, the university had already banned all events at the campus's open-air stage (Muktomoncho) after 10pm to preserve a conducive academic and administrative environment.
That earlier notice stated alumni and batch reunions during winter often continued past midnight, harming both the academic atmosphere and the natural environment, and causing unrest and disorder. The syndicate meeting held on 20 September decided on the restriction to maintain the overall environment of the university.
Regarding the reissued directive despite the previous ban, Azizur Rahman said, "The restriction on holding events after 10pm is not new. This notice serves as a reminder to students."
"If anyone violates the directive and continues events beyond the permitted time, the administration will take action under university regulations and national law," he added.
