'Deep conspiracy' over upcoming national election, alleges Jamaat's Taher
Jamaat-e-Islami's Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has alleged that a "deep conspiracy" is underway centring the upcoming national election and the future of Bangladesh.
"From newspaper reports, I saw that the national security adviser has travelled to India. The government must clearly state through a press conference what is being discussed there," he said while addressing a rally, organised by Jamaat's Sripur union unit, in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla this evening (14 November).
Taher also said the people of Bangladesh shed "life and blood" to resist Indian hegemony and will "never accept dominance or subservience".
He warned that if the government "yields to India's unjust demands or responds to any unfair proposal", its future "will not be good".
Taher further alleged that one political party "does not want reforms" and is trying to hold the election under "old, worn-out rules". The interim government, he claimed, has "fallen into that party's trap".
Accusing the government of "betraying" the public, he said its decisions do not reflect the will of the people.
"The government said it would hold a referendum, but it has added a twist. That is, the referendum and the national election will be held together. However, these two elections are not the same thing," he said.
