Two people were killed and four others injured after a truck hit a group of passengers standing on the Dhaka–Bhanga Expressway in Faridpur.
The deceased were identified as Minhajur Rahman, 24, of Ghoshgati village in Magura's Salikha upazila, and Farzana Yasmin, 30, of Bongram in Pabna's Bera upazila.
Police said the incident took place around 3:00am today in the Tarail area.
According to Shibchar Highway Police, a Jamuna Line bus heading towards Bhanga hit an unidentified vehicle from behind, damaging the front of the bus. While no one was injured in that collision, some passengers stepped out, with some walking along the expressway and some standing behind the stopped bus.
At that moment, a Jhenaidah-bound truck rammed into the back of the bus, hitting the passengers.
Police rushed the injured to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.
Among the injured was a two-year-old girl, Jannatul Ferdous, who was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Others are receiving treatment at Bhanga Upazila Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Dr Tanseef Zubair, Bhanga Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said the two deceased succumbed to their injuries before being brought to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.
Jahirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Shibchar Highway Police Station, said both the bus and the truck were seized after the accident. Citing low visibility in the early hours and excessive speed as a possible reason for the accident, he added that legal procedures are underway.
