At least three people, including two schoolchildren, were killed and five others injured when a truck crashed into a battery-run three-wheeler on the Dhaka-Pabna highway this morning.
The deceased have been identified as Tasmia, 13, daughter of Samsul Mollah; Nur Mohammed Toha, 14, son of Ahmed Ali Sheikh; and Akram Ali Khan, 55, the van puller.
Tasmia and Toha are students of class four and five students of a local school respectively. They hailed from Dhormogram and Goyeshpur village in Pabna Sadar upazila.
Police and locals said a Pabna-bound bamboo-loaded truck rammed into the van around 6:30am when the three-wheeler carrying schoolchildren was heading towards Bangabaria area.
Three people died on the spot, and five others suffered injuries in the accident, police said.
Among the injured, Babu and Saidul have been admitted to Pabna General Hospital in critical condition.
Md Abdul Khaleque, a local resident and an eyewitness, said a child was crossing the road when the truck driver lost control over the steering and crash into the three-wheeler.
Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Pabna highway was halted morning.
Confirming the accident, Assistant Sub Inspector of Pabna Sadar Police Station Md Mokles said police reached to the spot and rescued the injured victims. "We are working to keep vehicular movement normal on this busy highway," the ASI added.
