The much-anticipated two-hour series finale of "Stranger Things", titled "The Rightside Up", will make history as it premieres both on Netflix and in more than 350 theaters across North America on December 31, starting at 5pm PT / 8pm ET, with screenings continuing through January 1, 2026.
This marks the first time a Netflix original series episode will receive a theatrical release, signaling a bold move by the streaming giant. Netflix confirmed that details on participating theatres will be revealed soon.
Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer had earlier expressed their desire for fans to experience the finale together on the big screen. In a Variety interview, Matt Duffer said, "People don't realise how much time and effort goes into the sound and visuals. Watching it in theatres allows fans to experience that craftsmanship — and to share it together." Ross added, "It's about community. Seeing it with other fans would be incredible."
While Netflix has traditionally limited theatrical runs to select feature films, this release represents a rare exception. The company has previously partnered with major theater chains for limited screenings of titles such as "KPop Demon Hunters" and has scheduled an upcoming IMAX release for Greta Gerwig's Narnia adaptation in 2026.
Initially, Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria had dismissed the possibility of a theatrical run, saying the show's massive streaming audience "doesn't lack conversation or community." However, following a surge of fan enthusiasm online — including tens of thousands of comments urging for a theatrical event — Netflix appears to have reconsidered.
Fans can now prepare to ring in the new year with the "Stranger Things" finale — not just from their couches, but on the big screen, surrounded by fellow fans of Hawkins, the Upside Down, and one of television's most beloved ensembles.
