Ireland post 270/8 on opening day of Sylhet Test
On the first day of the Sylhet Test, Ireland posted 270 for 8 in their first innings against Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi fielders missed five chances on the day. Paul Stirling, who was dropped on 8 and 10, went on to make a half-century, while debutant Cade Carmichael, given a reprieve on 10, also reached fifty. Lorcan Tucker and Jordan Niland were among others who were fortunate to be let off.
Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with three wickets, while debutant left-arm spinner Hasan Murad took two. Catches were dropped by Shadman Islam, Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Mushfiqur Rahim.
Bangladesh, having lost the toss and put into field, struck early as Hasan Mahmud dismissed Irish captain Andrew Balbirnie in the very first over.
Stirling and Carmichael then forged a 96-run partnership for the second wicket. After lunch, Nahid Hasan removed Stirling for 60, and Carmichael was dismissed by Miraz for 59.
Curtis Campher (44) and Lorcan Tucker (41) played well thereafter but could not build on the innings, with both falling to Hasan Murad. On the final ball of the day, Jordan Niland was adjudged LBW to Taijul Islam. Making his debut in Test and first-class cricket, 19-year-old Niland scored 30. Barry McCarthy remained unbeaten on 21.
