At least four people were killed in separate road accidents in Lalmonirhat and Faridpur districts today and last night.

In Lalmonirhat, two people were killed and a woman injured after a battery-run auto-rickshaw lost control and fell into a roadside ditch in Aditmari upazila this morning.

The deceased are Bokul Mia, 60, of Dakshin Balapara Brahmottor village in Mahishkhocha union, and Atikul Islam Atik, 35, of Kochumura Barohat Kali area of the same union, said police.

The accident took place near the Pukurpar area on Mahishkhocha Bazar-Aditmari Bypass Road at 9:30am, said Aditmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Akbar.

Ali Akbar said, "The battery-run auto-rickshaw was heading towards Aditmari from Mahishkhocha Bazar with passengers. Upon reaching the Pukurpar area, the driver lost control and the vehicle veered off the road, into a roadside ditch."

Atikul Islam died on the spot. Bokul Mia was critically injured and first taken to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way, he said.

The injured woman passenger is currently undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex, the OC said.

In Faridpur, two people were killed and three others injured after a truck collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in Boalmari upazila last night.

The victims are Narayan Chandra Saha, 54, of Barnagar village, and Madhu Saha, 55, of Silahati village of the upazila, said police.

The incident took place in front of Kankhardhi Madrasa on the Majkandi-Bhatiapara regional highway around 11:00pm.

Police and locals said a timber-laden truck heading towards Faridpur hit the Satair Bazar-bound auto-rickshaw from Kadiradi Bazar, leaving the two dead on the spot and three others injured.

Mohammad Robiul Alam, chairman of Satair Union Parishad, said both of the deceased were traders at Satair Bazar -- Narayan ran a grocery shop while Madhu owned a cosmetics store.

Mohammad Nazmul Hasan, health and family planning officer of Boalmari upazila, said the injured are undergoing treatment at Boalmari Upazila Health Complex.

Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, OC of Boalmari Police Station, said the truck and auto-rickshaw were seized, but the truck driver fled the scene.

Legal actions will be taken after investigation, he added.
