BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has alleged that Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus violated the July charter "through his televised address" to the nation today.

In his reaction after the speech, Salahuddin told The Daily Star, "The July charter was signed by him, and violated by him through his speech."

Earlier in the day, the chief adviser announced that the national election and the referendum on the July charter will be held on the same day, as part of the government's efforts to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

In his 13-minute televised address this afternoon, he said the referendum would contain a single question seeking the people's verdict on the July charter implementation order, but that the question would include four parts.

Meanwhile, the BNP Standing Committee will hold an emergency meeting at 7:00pm today at the party chairperson's office in Gulshan.

The meeting will be chaired by the acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, the party's media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan said.

According to sources, the decision to call the meeting came after the chief adviser delivered his latest speech. The meeting is expected to review the July charter and outline the party's position and next steps of the chief adviser's remarks.
