A woman was injured after a suspected drug dealer opened fire, sensing a Rab raid, in Fatulla of Narayanganj on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The incident took place in West Masdair, confirmed Anowar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station.

The accused, Md Jahid, 25, is a listed criminal and an alleged drug trader from the Masdair area. According to police, he is accused in at least 10 cases, including charges of attacking police and drug-related offences.

The bullet hit Joba Akter, 22, of a neighbouring house in the area, who is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Joba's husband, Rahim Uddin, said she was in the kitchen when a stray bullet hit her in the chest.

"She is in critical condition," said Rahim quoting doctors.

On Saturday afternoon, Jahid and his associates allegedly hacked and injured Nahidur Rahman Parvez, a local Krishak Dal leader, in Masdair. Parvez claimed the attackers also fired at him during the assault.

CCTV footage of Saturday's attack spread on social media, prompting law enforcers to intensify operations to arrest the suspects.

Lt Col HM Sajjad Hossain, commander of Rab-11, told The Daily Star that Rab had been trying to arrest the accused following Saturday's attack.

"Rab's sources were tracking his location. After confirming it, our team headed for the spot. But somehow the identity of an informant got compromised, and the accused opened fire at random. The stray bullet hit the woman," he said.

He added that although the Rab team reached the spot within minutes, the suspect fled the scene.

OC Anowar said police are conducting drives to arrest Jahid.

Cases are being filed over Saturday's attack and Sunday's shooting.
