A Mymensingh court has sent two people to jail in a case filed over the assault of a 30-year-old jatra dance artiste in the city's Boro Kalibari area on Wednesday.
The perpetrators also cut her hair and smeared ink on her face.
The victim, Rupa, is the wife of Shahidul Islam Monto, a resident of Boro Kalibari.
The arrestees are Shah Alam, 40, and Aklima Khatun, 45, said Masud Jamali, sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station.
They were arrested from different parts of the city on Thursday night after Rupa filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on Wednesday evening against 14 people, including Alam and Aklima, said Md Sebirul Islam, officer-in-charge of the station.
SI Masud Jamali, the investigation officer, said the two were produced before a Mymensingh court today, which ordered them to be sent to jail.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to their involvement in the attack, the IO said.
Police operations are underway to arrest the remaining accused, added the OC.
Quoting the case statement, the OC said that following the ransacking of their house in the Boro Kalibari area "over previous enmity," Rupa had lodged a complaint with a court last year against 13 people, including neighbours Mahfuza and her husband Shah Alam. The accused later threatened her to withdraw the case.
As the case was not withdrawn, the accused allegedly kidnapped her son, a class 8 student. Police rescued the boy after being informed, according to the statement.
A sub-inspector from Kotwali Police Station visited the scene on Wednesday morning to investigate the incident. Moments after the police team left, the accused allegedly attacked Rupa, dragged her into their area, tied her hands and legs, and beat her. They also cut off her hair and smeared ink on her face.
After receiving a call from her husband through the national emergency service 999, police rushed to the spot and rescued Rupa.
She was later taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where she received first aid.
The victim's husband, Monto, said the accused demanded a large amount of money from them when they began renovating their house last year. "When we refused to pay, they ransacked my house and threatened us to leave the area," he said.
Monto said they have been living in a rented house in another part of the city since September last year due to the threats.
