We will respect '71 just as we do '24: Jamaat ameer
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today (15 December) said the party will give equal respect to the Liberation War of 1971 as it does to the July Uprising of 2024.
"Our nation's future was stuck in a quagmire of corruption. The July Uprising has created unity, now we have the scope to advance together. If Jamaat comes to power, we will include all parties and form a national government," he said at a discussion event of Jamaat's Dhaka South City unit at the National Press Club organised to mark the victory day.
He added, "Many people compromised with fascism, but Jamaat has never done so and never will."
Shafiqur Rahman also promised that if his party wins, it will ensure a government free from corruption, free from interference in the judiciary, and committed to implementing the July Charter.
Addressing journalists, he urged, "If you don't like our words, broadcast the full speech. Don't take bites out of context to spread misinformation. We welcome fair and true criticism."
At the event, Jamaat Islami Assistant Secretary Rafiqul Islam Khan said, "The goals of 1971 are still unfulfilled due to the corruption of past rulers, who prioritised their own fate over the people's."
He also questioned the interim government's handling of the attack on Osman Hadi, saying, "The home adviser should resign and take responsibility for this failure."
Jamaat's central Assistant Secretary General ATM Masud said, "Our people could not fully taste independence in the last 54 years. We were divided repeatedly by rulers, and the trust gained from the uprising was not safeguarded, which led to the attack on Hadi."
