Three buses were set ablaze in separate arson attacks in Savar, Chattogram and Narayanganj between last night and early today.
In Savar, a bus of Alif Paribahan parked near Birulia embankment was torched around 10:45pm in Battala area, said Md Wahab, sub-inspector and in-charge of the Birulia police outpost under Savar Model Police Station.
He said the bus owner, Amjad Hossain, had driven the vehicle himself and left it in front of the construction site when miscreants set it on fire and fled.
Amjad said he had parked the vehicle near the gate at around 8:30pm and returned home for dinner. Local residents later extinguished the blaze using buckets of water and sand, but the bus was completely burnt.
In Chattogram, a passenger bus was torched in Patenga area early today, while the signboard of the Metropolitan Sadar Circle Land Office in Chatteshwari area was also set on fire.
The incidents occurred between 1:40am and 3:00am.
Mamunur Rashid, senior station officer of Patenga Fire Service, said firefighters rushed to the GM Gate area after receiving information that a parked bus had been set ablaze.
The fire gutted the entire bus, though no casualties were reported.
Md Sadi Ur Rahim Zadid, additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) of the Chattogram District Administration, said masked miscreants climbed over the boundary wall of the Sadar Circle Land Office and torched the signboard before fleeing. Security staff were inside at the time, but no major damage occurred.
In Narayanganj, a group of miscreants set fire to a parked bus in Fatullah around 2:00am in front of the Customs, Excise and VAT office on the Dhaka–Narayanganj link road, said Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anowar Hossain.
"The driver and his helper were sleeping inside the bus. They woke up from the heat of the fire and managed to get out immediately," the OC said.
Bus driver Md Nasir said he and his assistant Nayon transport workers at a garment factory in Narayanganj city. After dropping off workers, they had parked the vehicle on the roadside and fallen asleep.
"Around 2:00am, we woke up feeling heat and saw flames near the driver's seat. We started shouting, and locals rushed in to put out the fire," Nasir said.
"We did not see who set the fire, as we were asleep," he added.
The OC said the front portion of the bus was slightly damaged, but both the driver and his helper escaped unhurt.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible.
