Melbourne's oldest Bengali cultural organisation, Srotar Ashor, marked its 20th anniversary with a grand celebration titled "Gaane Praane Dui Doshok" (Two Decades of Song and Soul) on November 9, at The Edge Theatre, Federation Square, in the heart of Melbourne.
Founded in January 2005, Srotar Ashor has since organised 66 cultural events for the Bengali-speaking community in the city. Staying true to its two-decade-long tradition, the anniversary programme began precisely at 5 PM. At the host's invitation, the organisation's newest and founding members jointly inaugurated the event before a full house of more than 600 attendees.
Over the next two hours and forty-five minutes, Srotar Ashor members performed a curated lineup of beloved Bengali songs, keeping the audience engaged throughout. Between performances, the host interacted with attendees and offered heartfelt tributes to the artistes, musicians, patrons, volunteers, and supporters who have contributed to the organisation's journey. Amidst laughter and warm exchanges, the audience also applauded Srotar Ashor's remarkable record of beginning every programme exactly on time.
To commemorate the milestone, the organisation unveiled a souvenir magazine, a special-edition T-shirt, and a commemorative USB featuring some of the most popular songs performed over the years.
The evening concluded to thunderous applause, as Srotar Ashor reaffirmed its commitment to continue nurturing Bengali culture in Melbourne for the next two decades—a testament to the community's enduring love and cultural spirit.
