Bangladesh's long-suffering football fans finally found reason to celebrate on Tuesday as the national team clinched a landmark victory over India -- their first win against their neighbours in 22 years. The 1–0 triumph sparked jubilant scenes across the country, with supporters celebrating late into the night.
One of the architects of the victory, Hamza Choudhury, departed Dhaka on Wednesday morning, heading back to England to rejoin Leicester City. The midfielder, who represented Bangladesh during the FIFA international window and scored two breathtaking goals against Nepal last week, will resume club duty immediately as Leicester City play their next match at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
Bangladesh's next fixture is scheduled for March 31 in Singapore, meaning fans will have to wait another four months to see Hamza don the red-and-green jersey again.
While Hamza resumed his journey to England, another standout performer, Shamit Shome, will remain in Bangladesh for a few more days. With the Canadian league currently on a brief break, the midfielder has travelled to Sylhet to spend time with family and relatives. USA-born forward Zayyan Ahmed, who sustained a slight injury during last night's game, is set to leave Dhaka on Thursday.
The local players, meanwhile, checked out of the team hotel on Wednesday morning to return to their respective clubs as the Bangladesh Football League action resumes on Monday.
Head coach Javier Cabrera, however, is supposed to fly back to Spain to attend to his ailing wife, who recently gave birth to a twin.
