Ex-MP Kazi Nabil’s bank accounts and Tk22cr investments frozen, travel ban imposed
A Dhaka court has ordered the freezing of 43 bank accounts and investments in 62 companies linked to former Jashore-3 lawmaker Kazi Nabil Ahmed and his associates.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez issued the order today (9 October) in response to a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), also imposing a travel ban on Nabil in a separate petition.
ACC Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam said the value of the immovable assets ordered to be frozen is estimated at Tk8.75 crore.
Meanwhile, the ACC investigating officer, Al Amin, had sought to freeze movable assets, including the 43 bank accounts and investments in 62 companies.
According to the petition, the accounts hold Tk61 lakh, while the investments in the 62 companies amount to around Tk22.27 crore.
The court ordered both movable and immovable assets to be frozen and attached.
The petition further alleged that Nabil, while holding a position of public responsibility, abused his power for personal gain and acquired assets worth Tk7.35 crore beyond his known sources of income.
Meanwhile, the ACC's Akhtarul Islam said that on 5 November, ACC Assistant Director and Investigation Officer Al Amin filed a petition seeking a ban on Nabil's foreign travel, which the court granted today.
According to the petition, he abused his position in public office for personal gain, amassing assets worth Tk7.35 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income.
It also stated that bank accounts under Nabil and his companies recorded deposits amounting to Tk54.94 crore and withdrawals of Tk54.27 crore, involving transactions worth Tk109.22 crore, deemed unusual and suspicious.
The ACC said these funds were transferred, moved, and converted through money laundering, which constitutes an offence under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
The petition added that a travel ban was necessary to ensure an impartial investigation until the probe is completed.
