Ex-Air Force pilot's body recovered after 3 days of boat capsize in Sundarbans
The Bangladesh Coast Guard today (10 November) recovered the body of a former Air Force pilot after three days of going missing in the Sundarbans.
Riyana Abzal lived in the United States and had come to the country to visit her family.
Confirming the matter, Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque said she, along with her family, had stayed overnight at the Mangrove Valley resort in the Dhangmari area of the Sundarbans, said .
On Saturday (8 November), they were traveling to Karamjol in a locally rented boat with 14 passengers on board. Around 1pm, the boat overturned near the Dhangmari canal due to strong waves. Thirteen people were rescued alive with the help of nearby boats, but Riyana remained missing.
Upon receiving news of the incident, two rescue teams from the Coast Guard Base Mongla and Station Harbaria were immediately dispatched to the site. After a three-day search operation, her body was found floating near the Mongla Silo Jetty around 7am today. The body was later handed over to the Chandpai River Police, said Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque.
He added, "The Bangladesh Coast Guard will continue its operations to ensure the safety and risk-free travel of all tourists."
