A defeated group is trying to rewrite the history of Bangladesh's Liberation War by distorting the narrative of independence for political interests, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said today (15 December).

Speaking virtually at a discussion marking Victory Day at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, in the capital, Tarique said those who once distorted the history of independence had effectively ended their own political relevance, creating space for "defeated forces of the Liberation War" to push a new version of history.

He alleged that anti-Bangladesh elements are still trying to obstruct the national election under various pretexts.

"Although the Election Commission has announced the election schedule after more than a decade and a half, conspiracies have not stopped," Tarique said, urging people to remain vigilant.

'Attack on Osman Hadi part of broader anti-democracy conspiracy'

Referring to the gun attack on Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Osman Hadi, Tarique described the incident as part of a broader conspiracy.

He raised a series of questions, asking who would benefit if the interim government were undermined, if elections were delayed, or if a people's government failed to be formed through the ballot.

"The answers to these questions point to the attackers and the enemies of democratic, freedom-loving people," he said.

Tarique asserted that attempts to intimidate pro-democracy forces would fail, adding that there was no reason for fear.

"History has shown that when people are united, no force can stop victory," he said, expressing confidence that the election would be held on schedule.

Describing the upcoming polls as more critical than any previous election, he said they carry the hopes and aspirations of present and future generations and are closely linked to safeguarding the country's independence and sovereignty.

The BNP's goal, he added, is to mobilise women, youth, farmers and the working population to "organise the country's victory."

Tarique also warned that domestic and foreign forces that once sought to undermine the Liberation War remain active, saying that while their appearance may have changed, their intentions have not.
