CUSS organises environmental workshop to promote sustainability at CU
The Chittagong University Scientific Society (CUSS) organised the Environmental Workshop yesterday (5 Novembe), the second segment of its weeklong Environmental Week 2025, at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries auditorium.
The event was co-organised by Amal Foundation, with The Business Standard as media partner.
The workshop focused on Energy Sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment, and the Three R Policy - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Opening remarks were delivered by Sarah Zabin and Samira Mehnaz of Amal Foundation, highlighting the NGO's ongoing projects, scholarship programs, and women empowerment initiatives.
The keynote speaker of the event, Mr Tanvir Shahriar Rimon, chief executive officer of RANCON Holdings, delivered an engaging discussion on environmental awareness and the importance of sustainable alternatives. He shared, 'We surely don't want to be the last generation to connect with nature. That's where the concept of sustainability emerges.'
The first session of the workshop was conducted by Ms Esrat Karim Eve, founder and executive director of Amal Foundation. She briefed the audience on the organisation's projects, including the eradication of child marriage and strengthening policies on climate action.
She also added, 'I am very much thrilled to encounter such young minds who are desperate to save nature.'
Additional sessions were conducted by Runi Rahman (BSRM) and Dale Orlando Taylor (AUW Laboratory School). Participants also joined a quiz and an extempore speech competition on environmental issues.
Closing remarks were made by Professor Dr Laila Khaleda, CUSS advisor, and K M Shifat Shahreen Shawccho, CUSS president. Winners of the competitions received prizes, and Professor Dr Al Forkan, advisor of CUSS, formally concluded the program.
The workshop was presided over by K M Shifat Shahreen Shawccho, with coordination by Senior Vice President Abidul Moula Khan, Vice Presidents Md Ekramul Haque Ekram and Md Rezanur Rahman Hridoy, Joint General Secretaries Kakon Saha and Pratik Dutta, Publication Secretary Atanu Singh, and IT Secretary Rayan Tanzim. Event management was led by Israt Jahan Mehek, Imtiaz Azad, Mobashira Anika, and Tamim Sarkar.
This workshop follows the Environmental Hackathon and precedes the Clean Campus Campaign at the University of Chittagong.
