Bridge secretary inspects Meghna–Dhanagoda bridge project site
Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Secretary of the Bridges Division and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA), inspected the proposed bridge construction site over the Meghna–Dhanagoda River connecting Matlab Uttar (Chandpur) and Gazaria (Munshiganj) upazilas on Thursday (6 November 2025).
Officials from the Bridges Division, Bangladesh Bridge Authority, project team members, upazila executive officers, and local administration representatives were present during the visit.
At 10:30am, the secretary inspected the project alignment and river management area stretching from Bhaberchar on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway (N-1) in Gazaria upazila to Matlab Uttar. He stressed the importance of accurately assessing the project's technical challenges, including river depth, current speed, and geological conditions.
Speaking during the visit, the bridge secretary said, "One of the government's priorities is to build non-discriminatory and cost-effective connectivity. This bridge is being constructed as part of that initiative. It is not just a bridge—it is the economic gateway to Chandpur."
He added that the bridge will significantly reduce travel time between the region and Dhaka, creating an alternative transport route and improving market access for fish and agricultural products from the Chandpur–Lakshmipur region. "This will enhance the livelihoods of marginal farmers and traders," he said.
The secretary noted that the project will also help ease pressure on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway and integrate the region more directly into the national economy. He assured that the bridge's design follows world-class engineering standards and environmentally sustainable practices, incorporating feedback from local residents.
The detailed design of the 1.85km four-lane cable-stayed bridge has already been finalised, while land acquisition is in progress. During the inspection, the secretary instructed officials of the Roads and Highways Department, Water Development Board, and Local Government Engineering Department to expand existing road networks in northern Matlab to ensure smooth connectivity.
After the inspection, he held a discussion with the Deputy Commissioner of Chandpur, Upazila Executive Officer of Matlab Uttar, and local stakeholders regarding land acquisition, urging everyone to cooperate with the Bridge Authority for the timely and successful implementation of this nationally significant project.
