At least 15 people, including a woman, were injured in a clash between supporters of BNP and Gono Odhikar Parishad in Patuakhali's Galachipa upazila last night.

The incident occurred around 9:00pm in Charshiba village under Charkajol union allegedly over an argument about who would get nomination -- BNP leader Hasan Mamun or Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, popularly known as "VP Nur".

The injured, from both sides, were admitted to the upazila health complex.

Locals said Gono Odhikar Parishad organised a meeting in Kupalbera Bazar yesterday evening to form a ward committee.

Meanwhile, BNP activists from Charkajol union brought out a procession on the eve of National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

After both events concluded, the two groups encountered each other at Dakshin Kupalbera intersection where an argument broke out over which leader would get the nomination to contest next year's national election.

The altercation soon turned into a clash, leaving at least 15 people injured.

One of the injured, local Jubo Dal leader Ilias, claimed that they were returning home after a procession when Gono Odhikar Parishad activists suddenly attacked them.

Aminul Islam, vice-president of Dhaka North Jubo Odhikar Parishad and brother of Nur, said the BNP men attacked their supporters after their procession.

BNP leader Hasan Mamun said they heard about the incident but were still gathering details.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ashadur Rahman, of Galachipa Police Station, said police were deployed in the area immediately after the clash.

"The two sides belong to rival families with prior disputes over local influence," he said.
