Banned AL's letter to UN 'won't do any good': Foreign adviser
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has said the banned Awami League's recent letter to the United Nations urging it to withdraw support for Bangladesh's upcoming national elections will not have any impact.
Responding to a question regarding the letter at the Secretariat today (6 November), he said, "It will not do any good," hinting that the Awami League's appeal is unlikely to influence the UN's position on the issue.
Earlier on 1 November, the Awami League, through former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, sent a letter to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) representative in Dhaka, calling on the UN to suspend its electoral assistance for Bangladesh.
The letter raised concerns about the election's credibility and inclusivity, urging the UN and UNDP to promote national dialogue, reconciliation among political parties, and uphold human rights and the rule of law.
The letter also expressed serious apprehensions about UNDP's ballot project and the organisation's institutional support for the upcoming elections, warning that such engagement could violate international law, UN principles, and UNDP's mandate to promote free, fair, and participatory elections.
