Another case has been filed against nearly 600 people in connection with the attack on the shrine of Nurul Haque, locally known as "Nurul Pagla," in Rajbari's Goalanda upazila on September 5.
Shirin Begum, Nurul's sister-in-law, lodged a complaint today with a Goalanda court against 96 named individuals and 400–500 unidentified people.
After taking cognisance of the complaint, Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamjid Hossain directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the incident, said the plaintiff's lawyer, Shariful Islam.
Khondkar Abdul Mohit, the retired principal of Government Goalanda Kamrul Islam College, has been named the prime accused in the case, he said.
According to police, on September 5, a group of people attacked Nurul Pagla's shrine, exhumed his body citing improper burial practices, and later burned the body near Padmar Mor on the Dhaka-Khulna highway. At least 50 people, including 10–12 police officers, were injured in the attack, and one follower of Nurul, Rasel Molla, succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier, Rasel's father, Azad Molla, filed a case with Goalanda Ghat Police Station against 3,500–4,000 unidentified people, accusing them of murder, arson, looting, vandalism, and assault during the attack.
Additionally, police filed another case over the assault on law enforcement personnel and the vandalism of vehicles, naming 3,000–3,500 unidentified individuals.
Police have arrested 16 people so far in connection with these incidents.
