Adele is set to step into the world of cinema, making her acting debut in Tom Ford's next feature film, an adaptation of Anne Rice's 1982 novel "Cry to Heaven".
According to Deadline, the Grammy-winning singer will join an impressive ensemble cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ciarán Hinds, Thandiwe Newton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Hunter Schafer, Daryl McCormack, George MacKay, Paul Bettany and rising star Owen Cooper. The 15-year-old Cooper, who won a Primetime Emmy for "Adolescence", will soon be seen in Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights".
Ford's film is based on Rice's operatic historical drama set in 18th-century Italy. The story follows a Venetian nobleman and a castrated musical prodigy from Calabria as they navigate ambition, betrayal and the seductive world of opera. The New York Times Book Review described the novel as "bold and erotic, laced with luxury, sexual tension and music," while the Washington Post called it "an absorbing look at a fascinating and little-known world."
The movie marks Ford's third directorial outing after "A Single Man", which earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination, and the thriller "Nocturnal Animals" starring Amy Adams. Ford, who stepped away from fashion in 2023, has spoken openly about dedicating the next chapter of his career to filmmaking.
"I wanna spend the next 20 years of my life making films," he told GQ. "Fashion is a younger man's game."
"Cry to Heaven" is currently in pre-production in London and Rome, with filming scheduled to begin in January. A late-2026 release is being targeted.
Adele had previously been linked to an acting debut in Xavier Dolan's "The Death and Life of John F Donovan", after the filmmaker directed her music video "Hello". While she expressed interest at the time, she ultimately did not appear in the final film.
The upcoming adaptation follows a resurgence of screen projects based on Anne Rice's work, including "Interview with the Vampire", "Mayfair Witches" and "Talamasca: The Secret Order".
