11-foot crocodile rescued from Ichhamati River's branch canal in Manikganj
A rare freshwater crocodile was captured by locals yesterday (8 November) from a branch canal of the Ichamati River in Choukighata area under Hatipara union of Manikganj Sadar upazila.
Locals had been spotting the crocodile in the canal for the past week, which caused panic in the area. Earlier, the Forest Department had urged residents not to panic.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Wildlife Inspector Abdullah Sadique of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit said, "The crocodile has been rescued and sent to the Khulna Wildlife Rescue Centre this afternoon (8 November)."
"The crocodile is approximately 11 feet long and weighs over 100 kilograms," Sadique added.
Around 9pm yesterday, locals managed to capture the crocodile using ropes and cloth traps.
Following the incident, members of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit of the Forest Department arrived at the spot and rescued the animal.
