We will continue the struggle for democracy: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (16 December) that the party would continue its struggle for democracy in Bangladesh.
"We have fought, are fighting and will continue to fight for democracy in Bangladesh," Fakhrul said after placing wreaths at the grave of martyred President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of Victory Day today.
Paying tribute on behalf of the party, Fakhrul said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman expressed their deep respect to all martyrs of the Liberation War of 1971.
He said the war that began in 1971 culminated in final victory on 16 December, making the day particularly significant for the nation and for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Fakhrul also offered prayers seeking the speedy recovery of Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as the country's first woman freedom fighter and a vigilant guardian of democracy who has relentlessly struggled for independence and sovereignty.
Referring to Tarique Rahman, the BNP leader said the party's leader is currently staying abroad and expressed hope that he would return to the country on 25 December.
"His return will further strengthen the movement for democracy. We will continue to work towards that goal," he said.
Fakhrul further said forces opposed to independence are once again attempting to raise their heads, but the freedom-loving, sovereignty-believing and democracy-loving people of Bangladesh would foil all such conspiracies.
"Insha'Allah, Bangladesh will preserve its independence and sovereignty, and democracy will be established," the BNP secretary general said.
