After a long wait of nearly six years, Rajshahi University (RU) wore a festive look today (17 December), as it celebrated its 12th convocation.

Campus grounds were filled with jubilant graduates dressed in traditional black gowns and mortarboards, marking the milestone in their academic journeys.

The last convocation of the university was held in November 2019, making today's event a long-awaited homecoming for many former students.

The day's proceedings commenced at 9:30am with a colourful convocation procession. Education Adviser Professor Dr CR Abrar presided over the ceremony as the chief guest and distributed certificates among the graduates.

Professor Dr SMA Faiz, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), delivered the convocation address.

According to the organisers, approximately 7,000 graduates registered for the event, including students who earned their undergraduate degrees in 2016, 2017, and 2018; those who completed postgraduate, MBBS, BDS, and DVM degrees in 2017, 2018, and 2019; and researchers who were awarded MPhil, MD, and PhD degrees between 2017 and 2022.

In his address to the new graduates, the education adviser urged them to look beyond individual success and dedicate their talents to the welfare of the nation.

"Graduates must work for others alongside their professional achievements. You must come forward for the welfare of the country and its people and take a firm stand against corruption," he said.
