Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain said that the launch of the Laldia Char Terminal has increased Chattogram Port's container storage capacity by 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), creating new opportunities for trade and business.

He made the remarks during the inauguration of the terminal this morning at Patenga, Chattogram.

Port officials said the capacity of Chattogram Port has now increased from 56,000 TEUs to 66,000 TEUs.

Speaking to reporters, the adviser emphasised that technological expertise, investment, and efficiency are crucial for improving port operations.

"There is potential for $4-5 billion in investment around the port. In advanced countries, most ports are operated by private companies. So why should we lag behind? We want to move forward in the same way," he added.

He stressed that no decisions would be taken that could harm national interests and that priority would be given to firms capable of efficiently operating the port.

"Our goal is to ensure that businessmen get opportunities while safeguarding the country's interests," he said.

The newly inaugurated Laldia Char Terminal, built on 14 acres of land, has space for 10,000 containers and 1,500 trucks. The terminal also includes an 8-acre heavy-lift cargo jetty backup area and a 10-acre APM terminal area.

Senior officials, including Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Moniruzzaman and other top ministry representatives, attended the event.
