Trials of cases filed over the killings during the July mass uprising, except those already under the International Crimes Tribunal, will be held in the Speedy Trial Tribunal, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs said today.

A special committee has also been formed to ensure proper and expeditious prosecution of serious offences, including murder, committed during the uprising, the ministry spokesperson Md Rezaul Karim said in a press statement today.

A total of 837 cases have been recorded across the country, alleging that killings were carried out on the orders of the former Awami League government to suppress student and public protests. Of these, trials in 45 cases are currently underway at the International Crimes Tribunal.

Police have so far submitted charge sheets in 19 murder cases in different criminal courts.

These cases will now be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2000, the statement added,

According to the ministry, the newly formed committee, led by an additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division, will compile a complete list of cases filed over killings and other serious crimes during the July uprising and assess their current status. It will identify any obstacles to prosecution, excluding cases under the International Crimes Tribunal, and recommend necessary actions to the government.

The committee will also keep affected families and the public informed of progress in due course.
