Leaders and activists of the Jahangirnagar University Central Student Union (Jucsu) staged a symbolic execution of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and distributed sweets on campus today (17 November), following the International Crimes Tribunal's death sentence over crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising.

The programme began around 4:30pm at the Bot Tola area, shortly after the verdict was delivered at around 2:45pm. Jucsu activists organised a celebratory procession marking the tribunal's announcement.

Participants included leaders and activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti at Jahangirnagar University, Jucsu office-bearers, and students from various years and departments.

However, Jucsu Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu was not present during the symbolic execution display.

During the procession, students chanted slogans, including "Hasinar din shesh, mishti khabe Bangladesh" and "Ei muhurte khobor elo, Hasinar fashi holo." They later distributed sweets across the campus and staged a symbolic hanging representing Sheikh Hasina.

Reacting to the tribunal ruling, Jucsu VP Abdur Rashid Zitu said, "We are largely satisfied with the verdict, because we wanted those involved in the massacre during the July Uprising to receive the highest punishment under the law. We want this verdict to be implemented without delay."

Jahangirnagar University Chhatra Shibir Office Secretary and Jucsu General Secretary Mazharul Islam said, "The International Crimes Tribunal today ordered Sheikh Hasina's execution. The tribunal she once established has now passed a historic ruling against her."

"Through distributing sweets and staging this symbolic execution, we want to send a message: anyone who attempts to establish a system like Sheikh Hasina or the Awami League in the future will not be able to survive in this country," he added.
