Renowned actor Jaya Ahsan, who has made a name for herself across borders with multiple Filmfare Awards and acclaimed performances in both Bangladesh and India, recently opened up about her artistic journey, the lessons she has learned, and her hopes for the future of Bangladeshi cinema.
In a recent podcast appearance, Jaya shared that her move to Kolkata was born out of a deep passion for her craft rather than frustration. "At one point, I wasn't getting the kind of roles I truly wanted in Bangladesh," she said. "But I needed to keep working — acting is my life. So I decided to explore Kolkata, and that opened up new possibilities for me."
Describing her experience in Tollywood, she added, "Even as an outsider, I was welcomed with strong roles and thoughtful stories. Filmmakers there trusted me with complex characters, and that trust helped me grow as an artiste."
While speaking candidly about her experiences at home, Jaya also expressed optimism about the changing landscape of Bangladeshi cinema. "There was a time when directors were hesitant to take creative risks with women-centric stories," she said. "But things are evolving now. Many dynamic and forward-thinking filmmakers are emerging, and I believe Bangladesh is on the verge of a creative renaissance."
Emphasising the importance of collaboration in filmmaking, Jaya said, "A film is never made by one person. It's a collective effort — the director, actors, cinematographers, even the spot boys. Everyone contributes. That's the true beauty of cinema."
Reflecting on her artistic journey, Jaya said she still feels her greatest performance is yet to come. "I don't think I've done my best work in Bangladesh yet," she admitted with a smile. "That dream role is still waiting for me — and when it comes, I want to give it everything I have."
With her unmatched dedication and cross-border success, Jaya Ahsan continues to bridge two film industries, standing as a symbol of passion, resilience, and the limitless potential of South Asian cinema.
