Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India M Riaz Hamidullah has been summoned by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

He was called to the ministry this afternoon (17 December), confirmed diplomatic sources.

However, the reason behind the summon is yet to be revealed.

Earlier on Monday (15 December), National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah warned that India's northeastern "Seven Sisters" states would be isolated if Bangladesh is destabilised.

Speaking at an all-party protest rally organised by Inqilab Mancha at the Central Shaheed Minar, Hasnat alleged that those creating chaos in the country, attempting to sabotage the election process, and involved in the attack on Osman Hadi are being backed by India.

According to sources, New Delhi is deeply disgruntled over the remarks.

Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma was summoned to Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Monday over "anti-election activities" by fugitive political figures.

According to a press release issued by the ministry, Bangladesh expressed serious concern over former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's continued public statements, which the government said were encouraging her supporters to engage in violent activities aimed at disrupting the upcoming parliamentary elections.
