ICT verdict a precedent against enforced disappearances, killings: Khelafat Majlis
The verdict delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today will stand as "a historic precedent" against enforced disappearances, killings, and persecution carried out through the misuse of state power, Khelafat Majlis Ameer Abdul Basit Azad said today (17 November).
The verdict has also set a new precedent for justice in the country, he said in a statement after the ICT sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her associate, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, to death.
Speaking about the crimes, Basit said, "Sheikh Hasina and her close associates committed heinous crimes against humanity by abusing state power over the past 16 years. Their actions repeatedly violated the country's sovereignty and human rights."
"Given the blood of thousands of martyrs, the maximum punishment for Sheikh Hasina and her accomplices was expected to establish justice," he added.
Regarding the ICT verdict, the Kelafat ameer said, "After reviewing testimony, evidence, and extensive arguments, the tribunal found the crimes to be proven and handed down the maximum penalty in the interests of justice."
He further expressed hope that all those involved in the crimes will gradually face trial and punishment, and that the government will take adequate measures to bring Hasina back from India.
