Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) today said those who participated in the 12th national election in 2024 should not be allowed to contest the upcoming 13th national polls even as independent candidates.

A party delegation led by its General Secretary Md Rashed Khan met Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the EC headquarters in Dhaka's Agargaon today and submitted a written application.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rashed said, "The Election Commission should not invite the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance to the electoral dialogue on the pretext of party registration."

"The Jatiya Party is a dead party. The people have rejected them. They are making statements only to stay relevant in discussion," he said.

He also urged the media not to give coverage to Jatiya Party statements.

In its application, Gono Odhikar Parishad said the "autocratic Awami League government" was overthrown on August 5, 2024, but alleged that the "arrogance of fascism" has persisted since then.

It accused the Awami League and its allies of attempting to sabotage the upcoming election over the past month.

The application also said the Jatiya Party, the 14-party alliance, and others who took part in the "dummy election" of 2024 under Sheikh Hasina's rule, thereby legitimising it and pushing the country toward destruction, should not be invited by the EC to any dialogue.
