Ahead of the upcoming general election and the referendum, the Election Commission (EC) has directed television channels not to broadcast any derogatory, demeaning or personally offensive remarks during talk shows and election-related discussions.

According to a press release signed by EC Public Relations Director Md Ruhul Amin Mollik today (17 December), the EC has also urged broadcasters to ensure equal opportunities for all political parties and candidates in airing election-related programmes.

A letter has already been sent to the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in this regard.

Per the EC's announced schedule, voting for both the national election and the July Charter referendum will take place simultaneously on 12 February next year.

The press release says creating a conducive environment is crucial for holding a free, fair and credible election.

Both state-owned and private television channels can play an important role in fostering such an environment by ensuring equal access to information for all candidates, it adds.

It notes that while airing programmes, interviews, talk shows or election dialogues related to the election and the referendum, broadcasters must ensure equal opportunities for all political parties and candidates.

The EC also referred to Rule 25 of the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates in Parliamentary Elections, 2025, which states that candidates contesting the election or representatives of political parties may participate in election dialogues organised by television channels; however, they shall not make any statements attacking anyone personally.

The commission also requested that all state-owned and private television channels remain cautious and take necessary measures to ensure equal media exposure for all candidates and to prevent the broadcast of any derogatory or offensive remarks against any party or candidate.
