A driver was burnt to death after miscreants set fire to a bus parked in Mymensingh's Phulbaria upazila early today.

The bus, belonging to Alam Asia Paribahan, was set ablaze around 3:15am in the Balukjan area, said Rokonuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Phulbaria Police Station.

The victim, identified as Julhas Mia, 35, was asleep inside the vehicle during the arson attack in front of Bhalukjan Bazar Petrol Pump, the OC told The Daily Star.

According to police, initial investigation and CCTV footage suggest that three individuals were involved in setting the bus on fire.

The OC said the bus coming from Dhaka stopped in front of a petrol pump around 2:45am, when all the passengers got off the vehicle.

However, as it was late at night, passenger Sharmin Sultana Rumki, 40, and her son as Shahid Islam Badsha, 20, of Phulbaria decided to wait inside the bus till morning. The driver, Julhas, was also inside at the time.

At one moment, three miscreants arrived and set the bus on fire before fleeing the scene immediately. As the bus went up in flames, the son managed to escape, but his mother suffered severe burn injuries, the OC said.

Julhas was burnt alive and died on the spot, the police official said.

The injured woman has been taken to a private hospital in Dhaka, while the deceased's body has been kept at the police station. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved in the incident, the OC said.
