Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain has met the BNP's acting chairperson Tarique Rahman in London during a private trip, marking their first in-person interaction in 17 years.

Shahadat, also a leader of the BNP, shared the update shortly after 1am on Sunday (16 November) on his official Facebook page, posting a photo of the meeting along with a brief note.

"After 17 long years with my leader, BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman," he wrote, tagging the location as Kingston, London.

The photo shows Shahadat handing Tarique a commemorative book published to mark his first year as mayor of Chattogram City Corporation.

Shahadat travelled to the UK on 9 November for what he described as a personal visit.

Tarique Rahman has been living in London for nearly 17 years. He left Bangladesh in 2008.

Shahadat, a former JCD leader, emerged as a BNP organiser during that period.

He lost the 2021 Chattogram mayoral election but assumed the role of city mayor on 3 November 2024 following a court order issued after the fall of the Awami League government.
