Coast Guard seizes massive haul of illegal fishing nets worth Tk626cr
In a major joint operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries have seized banned current nets worth about Tk626.59 crore near Muktarpur in Munshiganj.
According to Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, media officer of the Coast Guard, the drive was conducted based on intelligence inputs from 11:00pm on Friday (24 October) to 8:00am on Saturday (25 October) by Coast Guard Station Pagla, in coordination with fisheries officials.
Teams raided six warehouses and six net-making factories, confiscating approximately 17.90 crore metres of prohibited current nets.
Lt Cdr Siam-ul-Haq said the Coast Guard has been carrying out regular operations to protect fishery resources, including the prevention of jatka killing, conservation of brood hilsa, and removal of illegal fishing nets across maritime, coastal, and riverine areas.
Legal action regarding the seized nets is under way, he added, noting that such enforcement drives will continue.
