Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner, Md Nazmul Karim Khan, has been temporarily suspended. He was withdrawn from the post two months earlier -- for blocking public roads during his daily commute.
The suspension order, issued by the home ministry's Police-1 Division today, was signed by Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani.
According to the notification, Nazmul has been suspended under Section 39(1) of the Government Service Act, 2018 (Act No. 57 of 2018), as the government deemed it necessary and appropriate in the public interest to refrain him from government duties.
During the suspension period, he will remain attached to the Ministry of Home Affairs and will receive subsistence allowance as per government regulations.
Earlier, on September 2, the GMP chief was withdrawn from his post following widespread criticism after reports surfaced that roads were being closed for his movement between Dhaka and Gazipur, causing severe public suffering.
Following the incident, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said a show-cause notice would be served to Nazmul for his actions. He was later instructed to hand over his responsibilities to the next senior officer in Gazipur and report to the Police Headquarters in Dhaka.
