The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria observed the Great Victory Day 2025 with due dignity, solemnity and festive spirit.

Around 200 guests attended the programme, including members of the diplomatic mission, academics from leading South African universities, foreign dignitaries, diplomats, business representatives and leaders of the Bangladeshi expatriate community.

The programme began with the hoisting of the national flag, accompanied by the rendition of the national anthem, followed by a moment of tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War. First Secretary Md Toufiqul Islam read out the message of the president on the occasion of Victory Day, while Second Secretary Md Ashraful Haque read the message of the chief adviser, highlighting the spirit of the Liberation War, democracy, development and the country's journey towards prosperity.

Distinguished guest speaker Professor Ademola Olaniran, dean and head of the School of Agriculture and Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, paid tribute to the history and sacrifices that led to Bangladesh's independence. He also referred to the student-led movement in Bangladesh during July–August 2024, praising the role of the younger generation in upholding democracy, justice and civil rights, and describing it as a significant chapter in the country's democratic development.

Professor Md Shahidul Islam, professor and head of biotechnology at the School of Agriculture and Science, spoke on Bangladesh's progress in agriculture, science and technology, and highlighted opportunities for joint research and knowledge exchange between Bangladesh and South Africa. Bangladesh's Honorary Consul in Cape Town Le Roux also addressed the programme, stressing the importance of strengthening trade, investment and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Leaders of the Bangladeshi community in South Africa highlighted the significance of Victory Day and emphasised the role of expatriates in enhancing Bangladesh's image abroad.

The programme was presided over by High Commissioner Shah Ahmed Shafi, who said Victory Day remains the foundation of Bangladesh's national identity, independence and sovereignty. He noted that bilateral relations between Bangladesh and South Africa are steadily deepening, with scope to further expand cooperation in education, agriculture, science and trade.

The event concluded with a luncheon hosted in honour of the guests.
