1 killed, 50 injured in clash between rival groups in Brahmanbaria
A man was killed and at least 50 others were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups over establishing dominance in Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila early today (25 October).
The deceased was Md Nasir Uddin, 65, son of the late Moij Uddin of Birampur village under Sadekpur union.
According to police and local sources, a long-standing dispute over local dominance had been ongoing between former union parishad chairman Harun Mia and businessman Sacchu Mia, both residents of Birampur village.
The conflict turned violent at around 6am today when supporters from both sides, armed with local weapons, attacked each other. The clash continued intermittently until around 11:30am, leaving Sacchu Mia's supporter Nasir Uddin dead and at least 50 others injured.
During the violence, several houses belonging to both groups were also set on fire, locals said.
Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station, said, "Police and army personnel rushed to the scene after being informed of the clash and brought the situation under control."
"Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further violence," he added.
