HBO is developing a television adaptation of "V for Vendetta", Variety has exclusively reported.
According to sources, Pete Jackson is attached to write the series, while DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers alongside Ben Stephenson of Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, a Warner Bros Television Studios UK company. Warner Bros Television will produce the project.
Both HBO and DC Studios have declined to comment, while Jackson's representatives have yet to respond to requests for confirmation.
Originally created by writer Alan Moore and illustrator David Lloyd, "V for Vendetta" debuted in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior before DC Comics took over its publication in 1988. The story is set in a dystopian Britain ruled by the fascist Norsefire party, where an anarchist known only as V—recognisable by his Guy Fawkes mask—sets out to overthrow the regime with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescues from the secret police.
If greenlit, the series would join HBO's expanding slate of DC live-action projects. The network recently aired "The Penguin" starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, a follow-up to "The Batman" that won nine Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Milioti. Upcoming projects include "Lanterns", featuring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, expected to premiere in early 2026.
HBO previously earned critical acclaim for "Watchmen" (2019), a sequel to the original graphic novel by Moore and Dave Gibbons, released before Gunn and Safran assumed leadership at DC Studios.
Jackson, known for his BAFTA-nominated work on Channel 4's "Somewhere Boy" (2022), is also the writer behind the upcoming Sky Atlantic drama "The Death of Bunny Munro" starring Matt Smith.
The 2005 film adaptation of "V for Vendetta", directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis, starred Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman and grossed over $130 million worldwide. Warner Bros. plans to re-release the film in theatres in November 2026 to mark its 20th anniversary.
A previous attempt to develop a "V for Vendetta" series by Channel 4 was shelved, while the DC series "Pennyworth"—intended as a prequel—was cancelled after three seasons before completing that narrative arc.
