The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested 44 activists of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies, whose activities are currently banned, in separate operations across Dhaka.

Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP confirmed the development.

The arrests came amid the series of arson and crude bomb attacks in different parts of city ahead of AL announced "Dhaka Lockdown" programme tomorrow.

Police and security agencies have begun intensified operations in different parts of Dhaka and nearby districts to maintain law and order.

Check-posts have been set up at key points in the capital, with security personnel conducting searches of vehicles and pedestrians.

Army patrols have also been deployed alongside police to maintain law and order.

Law enforcers said they were on high alert to prevent any attempt at sabotage or violence.

Surveillance has also been intensified at all entry points to the capital, and the authorities have reiterated that no gatherings or demonstrations will be allowed tomorrow.

On May 12, the government banned all activities of the AL and its associated and affiliated organisations, on allegations of killings, genocide, crimes against humanity, and other grave offences during the July uprising.
